Nelson Mandela International Day
Boxing SA answered call to action for individuals, communities, and organizations to take
time to reflect on Mandela's values and principles and to make a positive impact in their
own communities.
The Regulator led by CEO, Mr Tsholofelo Lejaka spent the day at Leamogetswe Safety Home
in Atteridgeville where they were painting and cooked lunch for the 80 children, and 20
staff members at the Home.
We would like to express a word of gratitude to Mrs Matlakala and Leamogetswe Safety
Home for a day well spent.

Following several repeated transgressions and violation of sub-regulation 16 of Boxing South
Africa Regulations of 2004, the Board of Boxing South Africa has resolved to place Asemahle
Wellem on precautionary suspension effective from Thursday, 24 July 2025.
Pretoria, South Africa – Boxing South Africa (Boxing SA), through its Women in Boxing Committee, will host a landmark media launch event on Friday, 01 August 2025 to unveil its strategic programs focused on empowering women in the sport of boxing. The launch is a critical moment aligned with Women’s Month in South Africa, a time dedicated to celebrating and accelerating gender equity across all sectors.
Boxing Fraternity
By directive of the Board Chairperson, Ms Ayanda Khumalo, this serves to share the Draft Amendments to the 2004 Boxing Regulations.
As per resolution of the Boxing Convention, the Board of Boxing South Africa hereby invite inputs of the Boxing Fraternity on these proposed amended regulations, prior to their submission to the Minister for final public consultation.
As part of this process, there will be focused consultation process with respective licensee categories to workshop the proposed amendments and ensure that each licensee properly understands areas where the amendments are proposed, rationale for those proposal and how each amendment is likely to impact on the respective licensee. The CEO’s Office will communicate the dates for consultation with each licensee category.
Alongside that process stated above, the draft amended regulations and the accompanying checklist are hereby available for the boxing sector perusal and inputs. We invite all stakeholders to carefully review the draft and share their valuable feedback before 31 August 2025.
Once all inputs have been received, the Board will consolidate the feedback and submit the updated draft to the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture for public consultation.

Boxing South Africa (Boxing SA) is pleased to announce the formal introduction of the Women in Boxing Committee (WiB). The WiB Committee is a standing committee appointed by the Boxing South Africa Board, in terms of Section 7(1)(y)(iii) of Chapter 2 of the Boxing Act, No. 11 of 2001. This initiative marks a significant step towards strengthening and empowering the role of women in the sport of boxing.
The vacant position of CFO at Boxing South Africa has now been filled, after the appointment of a seasoned financial practitioner, Mr Betram Moses. Mr Moses is a battle bruised financial practitioner with well over three decades of experience in the financial sector, more especially in the private sector. Having worked in senior positions for entities such as Multichoice, Mnet and recently Hitachi Construction Machinery Africa (Pty) Ltd, we believe Mr Moses will greatly assist Boxing SA in its regeneration pursuit.
On Monday, 2 June 2025, the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Hon. Gayton McKenzie confirmed the appointment of Dr Luvuyo Bayeni as the seventh member of the Board of Boxing South Africa. This appointment comes following the resignation of Dr Vince Blennies who resigned in April 2025 following his appointment at the National Film and Video Foundation, thereby creating a vacancy in the board.
Carnival City is expected to be on standstill on Saturday, 24 May 2025 when Boxing 5 presents “Back to the City”, a thrill-a-minute boxing tournament with three prestigious IBF African title fights and exciting boxing talent on show. Carnival City is one of the most revered boxing arenas in the country having opened its doors to boxing in 2000. It was in Carnival City that veteran promoter, Rodney Berman hosted heavyweight world title fight between Lennox Lewis and Hasim Rahman, termed “Thunder in Africa”.

Boxing South Africa seeks to appoint one Committee Member to its Audit & Risk Committee, pursuant to the expiration of term of office of one of its three members. The new members term of office will be for 3 years. The staggered term of office of the Committee Members’ is consciously intended as such for business continuity and succession purposes. The appointment will be supported by a term of reference and a contract. Remuneration will be paid in accordance with the Treasury Regulations.
On Tuesday, 25 February 2025, Boxing South Africa (BSA) issued an official notification to Ms Zandi Malinga of Starline Promotions cancelling the tournament that was meant to take place on Friday, 28 February 2025 at the Greenwood Parkhall, Durban. The cancellation was because purse money, which is earnings for the boxers, had not yet been paid into BSA’s account as per the Boxing Regulations of 2004.

Nika ‘The Sting” Kumalo is one of South Africa’s favourite boxing legends, one of the select few fighters to hold two South African titles. He produced many memorable performances in the late eighties (80s) and early nineties (90s) but just did not make it to the top after losing two cracks at the WBO welterweight title.
Boxing legend, Welcome Ncita is one of the best sporting personalities ever to come out of South Africa. The former IBF Super Bantamweight Champion, affectionately known as, “The Hawk” had an impressive total of forty-four fights, losing just three and winning one in an illustrious career that spanned for almost two decades. Ncita made six successful defences of his IBF junior featherweight world title, was undefeated in thirty-two fights at some stage, making him one of the most decorated boxers of our generation. He sat down with Boxing SA Media to look back on some of the moments in his career.
Phumelela Cafu has told Boxing SA Media that his victory against Japanese, Kosei Tanaka that landed him WBO junior-bantamweight title earlier this month is only just the beginning. Cafu (26) who went to Japan had an impressive record of 10 wins, eight via knockouts, and three draws, was awarded the WBO title at the Arieke Arena, Tokyo, Japan by a split decision and that he dropped the champion, Tanaka in the fifth round could have done him a world of good.
The licensing system will be opened from 1st November 2024 until 15th November 2024, closing at 23:59. All license applicants are strongly urged to respect this timeframe, as this will be the final licensing window for the 2024-2025 financial year.

One of the immediate tasks of the Board is to stabilise administration, governance and finances of the entity as mandated by the South African Boxing Act No. 11 of 2001, South African Boxing Regulations as amended in 2005, Public Finance Management Act No.1 of 1999 and other relevant legislation.

The comments made by Acting CEO in Parliament about the article which was published by the City Press on the 05th November 2023 still stands.
Once again BSA notes with disgust the ongoing, intensified media campaign which seeks to taint and besmirch the good name of BSA. It is with deep sadness that Boxing South Africa mourns the loss of Ronald "King" Malindi, a true South African Bantamweight Champion with an unblemished record of 19 professional fights without a single loss, he stood just one victory away from securing sole possession of the South African Bantamweight Belt. Boxing South Africa (Boxing SA) has learnt with great shock the passing of Njabulo “Njay” Merile yesterday. The 27-year-old Merile was a South African boxer who hails from Zondi in Soweto and was one of the upcoming boxers in Gauteng Province having started his professional boxing career in 2018. The stylish young lad had dreams of reviving his career this year and his death came as great shock. Details of the funeral will be communicated accordingly.

Boxing South Africa in conjunction with Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation hereby invites members of the media to the upcoming Gauteng Boxing Convention.
On Sunday, 03 September 2022 history was made by Sivenathi “Special One” Nontshinga by defeating unbeaten Hector Flores in his backyard in Mexico in contest for the vacant IBF Junior-Flyweight Championship.
Boxing South Africa (Boxing SA) is the regulatory and administrative body of professional boxing in the South Africa and derives its powers from the Boxing Act, No. 11 of 2001 (Act). The Act places numerous responsibilities on Boxing SA and in this regard the Act provides amongst other the following objectives:
• To provide for marketing mechanisms to promote professional and amateur boxing in general,
• Provide for the participation and involvement of women in boxing.
On the 17th June 2022 Boxing South Africa issued a media statement in which it advised of the outcome of the urgent application by Mr. Kometsi which was heard on the 16th June 2022. In terms of the award the arbitrator had ruled that the Board of BSA did not have the power to suspend Mr. Kometsi pending a disciplinary hearing. In the same communique BSA advised that it intended to challenge the decision against it in court a law urgently and that it had instructed its attorneys to prepare the necessary papers.
To wrap up the women in boxing week initiative, Boxing South Africa in partnership with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture hosted a women in boxing breakfast session with the DSAC Deputy Minister Ms Nocawe Mafu in Umhlanga, Durban on Saturday, 27 August 2022 where women in the boxing fraternity had the opportunity to engage with the minister and other dignitaries.
